The mission of the Gold Shovel Foundation is to facilitate and financially sponsor municipal participation in reducing damages. The resulting GSS communities are at reduced risk of damages to assets buried there, preventing life-threatening damages.
The Gold Shovel Foundation is the national expansion of the predecessor effort, Great Lakes Foundation in Michigan, in partnership with MISS DIG 811. The Great Lakes Foundation seeks to have more than 100 Michigan municipalities engaged in Gold Shovel Standard by December 31, 2020, and to have more than 15 GSS communities established throughout Michigan by the same date.
Municipalities willing to help develop Gold Shovel Standard Communities can receive financial and other incentives through the Gold Shovel Standard Foundation.
